At the junction between the oesophagus and the stomach is an unusually strong sphincter which makes it almost impossible for stomach contents or gas to be regurgitated from the stomach. Therefore the vomiting reflex is very uncommon in horses; and distension of the stomach can be so severe that it will actually rupture rather than facilitate vomiting.
